Kenya Rejects Obama's Gay Rights Lecture

Monday, 10 August 2015
President Barack Obama is in Ethiopia Monday, the first sitting American president to visit East Africa's second most populous nation. He's holding talks with Ethiopian and African Union leaders on counterterrorism, human rights, and regional security.
Obama wrapped up a two-day visit to Kenya Sunday, where he urged leaders in his father's homeland to root out corruption, treat women and minorities as equals, and protect the rights of homosexuals.
"I've been consistent all across Africa on this," the president said. "I believe in the principle of treating people equally under the law, and that they are deserving of equal protection under the law and that the state should not discriminate against people based on their sexual orientation."
But in a tense exchange, Kenya's president rejected Obama's message on gay rights, saying it was one value Christian Kenya does not share with the United States.
"The fact of the matter is that Kenya, the United States, we share so many values, but there are some things that we must admit we don't share -- our culture, our society don't accept," President Uhuru Kenyatta said.
"This is why I repeatedly say that for Kenyans today, the issue of gay rights is really a non-issue," he continued. "We want to focus on other areas that are day-to-day living for our people."
In Kenya, homosexual relations carry a punishment of imprisonment. In this overwhelmingly Christian nation, many residents shrugged off the U.S. president's lecture on gay rights.
"Of course, the way President Obama talked about gays and what have you, lesbianism or transgender, whatever, according to him, you know, we took him as an American. He was answering like an American," Nairobi resident Ibrahim Lincoln said. "But according to our African cultures, the Christian beliefs -- we say no."

Benedict: God Mystically Told Me To Resign

Wednesday, 21 August 2013

Former Pope Benedict has revealed he resigned after God told him to during what he described as a "mystical experience".
Benedict, whose formal title is now Pope Emeritus, announced his shock resignation on February 11.
Just over two weeks later, he became the first pontiff to step down in 600 years, opening the way for the current Pope Francis to be elected.
The Catholic news agency Zenith quoted Benedict as saying "God told me to do it" to a visitor to the convent in the Vatican gardens, where he is living out his retirement in near isolation.
Benedict told his visitor, who asked to remain anonymous, that God did not appear before him in a vision but spoke to him in what he called "a mystical experience".
Italian media had previously claimed that Benedict's decision to step down was influenced by the various scandals that blighted his eight-year papacy.
Among them was the arrest of his personal butler for leaking private documents alleging corruption in the Vatican.
His successor Francis, the former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina, was elected as the first non-European pontiff in 1,300 years.

According to Rome-based Zenith, Benedict told his visitor that the more he observes the way Francis carries out his papal duties, the more he realised the choice was "wanted by God".
Last Sunday, Benedict spent a day at the papal summer retreat at Castel Gandolfo, south of Rome, to escape the heat of the capital.
The visit indicated that the 86-year-old's health was good enough for him to travel. There had been media reports that since his resignation, Benedict's health had deteriorated dramatically.

Redeemed Church to build 3-kilometre long church auditorium

Tuesday, 13 August 2013

The Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, announced last week, through its General Overseer Pastor Adeboye that they will build a three kilometer long auditorium because the current one they have now, Redemption Camp, on the Lagos-Ibadan Express Way in Mowe, Ogun state which was built in 2000 with a capacity to sit one million people could no longer accommodate the millions of people who attend service there.

According to pastor Adeboye, the new auditorium will be built at the mission’s camp ground at km 46, Lagos-Ibadan expressway. Some Nigerians are already criticizing the plan saying the billions that will spent in building this auditorium, which will only cause more queues along this express way, could be used for other things, like hospital, school, farmland, anything that will provide employment - but then, bringing more souls to the Lord is a good thing! :-)

A 3km auditorium is pretty wide. Do you know how long it will take you to walk 3km? 35 minutes.

When Redeemed builds this auditorium, it will be one of the top ten churches in the world in area size.

Rick Warren's First Sermon Since Son's Suicide Promises Push on Mental Health

Thursday, 1 August 2013

Following the April suicide of their son, Rick and Kay Warren have a new purpose for their 20,000-member megachurch: removing the stigma of mental illness from churches.
Rick Warren, joined by his wife on stage, preached at Saddleback Church on Sunday for the first time since Easter, five days before Matthew Warren's death. The sermon, the first in a six-part series on grief entitled "How To Get Through What You're Going Through," related the Warrens' journey to rely on hope in God in their subsequent grief.
"God knows what it's like to lose a son," Rick Warren noted.
He ended by promising his Saddleback congregation that their next major ministry focus would address mental illness within churches. Though Saddleback already sponsors a support group for family and friends of people with mental illnesses, Warren envisions a program similar to Saddleback's campaign against the stigma of those with HIV/AIDS.
"It's amazing to me that any other organ in your body can break down and there's no shame and stigma to it," Warren told the congregation. "But if your brain breaks down, you're supposed to keep it a secret…. If your brain doesn't work right, why should you be ashamed of that?"
The Warrens noted in April their plans to use proceeds from the sale of their son's house to fund a mental health ministry. Rick Warren noted in a recent Orange County Register interview that the initiative would take inspiration from Saddleback's existing HIV/AIDS initiative: "Ten years ago, God called Kay, and then me, to help remove the stigma attached to HIV & AIDS," he said. "Now, it looks like we're being called to help remove the stigma for a much bigger disease. 34 million people have HIV & AIDS but 400 million battle mental illness worldwide."
In his four-month absence, Saddleback hosted a wide variety of substitutes preaching for Warren, including Greg Laurie, Francis Chan, Wilfredo de Jesus, Russell Moore, Jud Wilhite, Perry Noble, Judah Smith, Mark Driscoll, Doug Fields, Pete Wilson, Matthew Barnett, Steven Furtick, Craig Groeschel, and Alan and Phil Robertson (of A&E's Duck Dynasty).
Saddleback will broadcast the July 27 service online every two hours for a week following Warren's return to the pulpit.
In the months since Matthew's death, Rick Warren has used the media attention surrounding his family to voice support for church initiatives such as a resolution passed by the Southern Baptist Convention addressing mental illness. Leaders have voiced support for the Warrens, with some, such as former Southern Baptist president Frank Page, sharing their own stories with mental illness and suicide.
